Et Cetera Production's Strata

Coming across the intriguing promotional photos on social media networks, you can't help but wait in anticipation for the premiere of Strata. The feature is Et Cetera Production's latest film, directed by acclaimed screen writer Cajetan Boy.

The film revolves around Jasmine/ Jazz, a mixed race Kenyan, who goes on a quest to track down her fiance's killer. Jasmine goes though several hurdles, including having to deal with Kush- "a corrupt police officer who is oobsessed with her, and a whole lot of people who are convinced that his death is for the better, she has to come face to face with the reality that ZEAL, the man she loved led a double and dangerous life." The synopsis reads in part:
As JAZZ gets to find out more and more of ZEAL’s life, she meets up with SILK and her brother SHEBE.

What is their involvement in ZEAL’s double life?

What exactly the twisted relationship between brother and sister?

What is ZEAL’s involvement with a certain mental institution is?
Who really killed ZEAL? Was it a case of revenge, jealousy or something more complex.

This story brings out how far one can go for the person they love, and the fact that the dark secrets we sometimes keep in our closets cannot stay hidden forever.

The story definitely sounds captivating and I can't wait to watch it. The star cast includes Sabina Stadler as Jazz, Veronica Waceke as Silk, Omfwoko Aswani as Shebe, Gilbert Lukalia as Zeal and Elchi Amin as Kush. I had a talk with the film's director Cajetan Boy and this is what he had to say:

What was the budget of the film?

The budget for the movie was 6.5 million kshs. That we could not realise - when the Kenya Film Commission offered seed money we reduced our budget to 1.5 million Kenya shillings. Kenya Film Commission gave us 150,000 Kenya Shillings. The shortfall has been covered by Et Cetera Productions, donations in kind (skills) from cast and crew and an executive producer - who has so far put in about 40 which we hope will rise to 150-200k.

Apart from funds, what was your biggest challenge before and during the shoot?

It all boils down to funds - as locations. props-like cars and guns - they all cost money or if volunteered- you need to rush with them - so that is the biggest challenge.

Who is Strata's target audience?

The target audience is the general Kenyan public. If it crosses over to other countries in the region, the continent and the world - the better.

When do you expect to launch the film?

If all goes well - launch should happen within the next 2 months.

How do you hope to distribute the film?

The initial plan is to screen it in as many venues, schools, colleges as possible. We do not have the funds at the moment to think DVDs, but this could change if we get a partner or a patron. The mainstream cinema halls - I doubt it.

Watch the sneak peak of Strata here and keep up to date with the film on the Strata Facebook Page.
