MTV continued to rock Kenya and the rest of the world with its hard hitting series, Shuga. The second series presented 6 mini episodes exploring love, sex, money and HIV/AIDS. The series follows the lives of new age young Kenyans who are chasing after the dream; to get the dream job, get the girl and deal with unexpected turns in life when they are infected or affected by HIV/AIDS. The series concluded airing its second series, and is set to go into production of its third series later on this year.

The first season of Shuga, was produced and aired in 2009 and it left a lasting impression in Kenya. It was definitely one of the first new era productions in Kenya speak candidly about social issues and HIV/AIDS in a young, hip voice. MTV collaboratively produced the series with UNICEF and PEPFAR. The series portrays the unknown glamorous, fun loving and almost reckless side of the Kenyan youth. The main theme is risky sexual behavior, which has been identified as one of the main causes of the increased spread of HIV/AIDs amongst the youth.

The first season showcased both new and seasoned Kenyan actors like Lupita Nyongo who acted as Ayira and singer turned actor Valentine Njoroge who acts like the ‘good girl.’ The second season presented a line-up of some of the top actors and musicians in Africa. With Nigerian top acts including Banky W, Wizkid and 9Con making appearances in the series. Like most MTV productions, music is a prominent part of the production and the series features new age African music.

The second season was directed by Teboho Mahlatsi from South African and was co-directed by Lupita Nyongo, a renowned Kenyan film maker and actor stared in the series as Ayira. Alison Ngibuini, who is a well known producer in Kenya, was one of the associate producers of the riveting series.
