We visited Cafe Deli, formerly Coffee World, just across from Galitos, on Moi Avenue and this was our experience.

The ambience reels you in; with eye-catching boxed lampshades hanging from the ceiling against the backdrop of concentric circles in silver and red lining up the wall to the right. Café Deli has that somewhat homely feel, precisely what you need from a coffee shop. The left wall displays large framed pictures of some of the establishment’s offerings and information about their catering services. They also have power outlets lining up the wall to the right, making it an ideal place to charge up any electronics you have with you. They offer free WiFi access to their patrons, with pretty decent speeds.

Their menu comprises of an ample selection of meals and refreshments, although in our opinion it is not the place for anyone looking for a hearty ‘Kenyan-style meal’ (heaped plates of food with). Although there are selections of filling meals to choose from including beef, fish and chicken dishes which are accompanied with salads, fries, rice or chapati. Their menu also offers selections of burgers and sandwiches. The sandwiches, particularly their Tramezini, are a must try as well as their selections of toasted and cold sandwiches. Their cakes are also worth mentioning, their white forest being what initially drew us to the establishment 5 years ago. Service is swift and the waiters are friendly. We have to give a special mention to Peter who was based at this Café Deli but moved to their extension, the former Green Corner near Kencom, for always making you feel right at home.

The cake display at the entrance of Cafe Deli attracts some onlookers who occasionally as the guard about pricing.

There were minimal shortcomings we could identify, but they are still worth noting. The place could do with some sprucing up, apart from switching the position of the cake display to the front entrance nothing much has changed over the past 5 years that we have visited the establishment. The seats also could be better; they are an assortment of typical seat and arched seat designs encased in dark silver and dark brown leather. Although you are almost immediately offered a menu when you arrive; service can take a while to come through from taking your order to actually bringing your meal. During the day seating is never a problem, but from 4.30 pm going into rush hour it can be difficult to get seating. This is the same case with their extension near Kencom.

All in all, we give them a 4.5 out of 5 rating and a thumbs up for being one of the ideal coffee shops in town to grab a bite over lunch or a cup of coffee while waiting out the evening traffic.
We had the opportunity to talk to the 3 brothers behind the crafts business and delve further into the crafts market in Kenya.

Joseph, Peter and Seth the African Eye Crafts team.

Joseph, Seth and Peter Olero are the owners of African Eye Crafts, an online-based business that offers assortments of beautifully crafted wall hangings and home decorations. The brothers also work with Ken Seda, their colleague and friend, who specializes in photography, branding and signage. The three brothers have all gone through college, and Joseph in particular was employed, but they eventually chose to concentrate on their home-based crafts business. Here is what the brothers had to say about their business.

What Crafts Do You Produce?

Joseph: Mostly wall hangings and home decorations including stone-frame decorated mirrors, calabash made lamp stands, sculptures, custom wooden clocks and portraits. Our products are largely handmade, except for using necessary assembling tools such as hand drills and glue. We also do branding and signage, as well as offer consultations to clients on home decoration.

Would You Say That Crafts Have A Viable Market in Kenya?

Seth: There is a market for crafts in Kenya; we are busy. Like today we have been delivering finished products and still have clients making more orders.

Wall art done by African Eye Crafts.

How Do You Get Your Clients? Joseph: We primarily operate through our Facebook page and we do have a website. Our business also comes from referrals, when you do good work for a client they will always recommend you to others. We also market ourselves on OLX and are currently working on a partnership deal with Nsoko.

What Are Some of The Strangest Requests You Have Gotten From Clients?

Joseph: A request for a nude wall hanging. She said that she had been married for 11 years and she wanted some ‘more action in the bedroom’ with her husband and asked for a nude portrait to help with this.

Seth: I also got a request to create a nude sculpture for a client, but we never proceeded to actually making the product.

What is The Main Challenge of Dealing in Crafts As A business?

Joseph: The main challenge is lack of space; we do not have a workshop, which limits the things that we can do. We get the question a lot “do you have a shop,” well we don’t have a shop we are onine-based.

Seth: Finding an appropriate place to set up a shop and making payments for the shop is quite expensive. Some clients cannot come here, most being women, they fear coming to our house and this sometimes prevents them from doing business with us. They trust a shop more than telling them to come to your house.

Joseph: Most of them come, but a few have that insecurity. However, we overcome this by taking our business to the clients.

Sample wall art done by African Eye Crafts.

Is There a Problem With Safeguarding Intellectual Property When It Comes to Crafts in Kenya?

Seth: I had someone create a similar product like mine, but there wasn't much that I could do.

Joseph: The quality of our products speak for themselves and that is what will always set us apart from the rest.

Seth: Even if they copy what we do, they can never quite make products like ours, because they do not know our trade secrets and cannot match our work ethics.

Joseph: Yes, even if you decide to copy someone else’s work, put your own twist to it to create an identity for yourself. If you do what everyone else is doing, you will not get your own identity.

What advice do you Have For Young People Interested in Making A Living From Crafts?

Joseph: Since we started, “hatujaenda mbali lakini, tumetembea (we have not gone far, but at least we are somewhere),’ but we have learnt a few things. Don’t try wazungu.

Peter: Yes, they don’t buy.

Joseph: Tourists don’t buy, let them go to Maasai Market.

Peter: Our products are large and heavy, not exactly what a tourist is looking for.

Seth: I have tried to sell in Mombasa, a mzungu will not buy crafts like ours. They like small things that they can carry and take with them as souvenirs.

Ken: Do not give up, starting may be hard and it will take sometime to start earning from what you do.

Peter: Diversify the products you create, do not focus on one product, to offer a variety to clients and satisfy the diverse needs of different clients.

Wall decor by African Eye Crafts.

Joseph: We have been discussing about teaching crafts to kids during school holidays and are still working on the fine print to make this happen.

Seth: We are also thinking of expanding sales to outside the country through eBay. However, to make this happen we would have to come up with standard or signature products which are easy to replicate for commercial sale. The day reinforces the importance of proper hand hygiene practices to patients, their families and health workers.

[caption id="attachment_943" align="aligncenter" width="522"]<img alt="Hand Hygiene Day aims at encouraging patients, their families and health workers to observe proper hand hygiene practices.
Statics claim that out of 10 Kenyans 9 often don't wash their hands after using the toilet. We set out to find out whether Kenyans do wash their hands, by trailing a couple of children and a few adults. Our findings asserted that Kenyans actually do wash their hands, but few do so using soap.

Why should anyone care whether you wash your hands and whether you use soap or not? The answer is simple; you should care because it could directly affect your health and that of your loved ones. In Kenya alone it is estimated that about 38,000 children lose their lives to pneumonia and diarrhoea. Although the World Hand Hygiene Day is not given much attention in Kenya, the country has been recognizing the Global Handwashing Day particularly through shcool-based handwashing activities.

In 2010 Kenya set out to break the Guinness World Record, and claimed it, for the largest number of people using soap to wash their hands in multiple locations concurrently. In subsequent years schools across the country have kept on commemorating the day by hosting handwashing activities geared towards advocating for proper handwashing practices.

As the world observes this day, we would like to encourage you to wash your hands using soap and pass on this seemingly obvious life-saving information to family and friends.
What started as a small intimate gathering soon grew into a popular weekly event where all nature of performers would gather to showcase their talents. This was Kikaoo, and one of the groups that started showing up to perform at the Kikaoo events quickly becoming a hit among the gathering was Elani.

Their sound was and still is different we call it afro fusion with a twist, new-age afro fusion if you will. They derive some elements of their musical style from Sauti Sol, who had just broken into the mainstream music industry and occasionally turned up at Kikaoo to perform as well. However, what was memorable about them was that their songs were essentially stories with soul in them. That's why when we came across their YouTube channel and a video for their new song KooKoo we simply had to share.

Interesting facts about Elani is that music director extraordinaire Enos Olik used to be part of the group; if memory serves right he was always strumming away on his guitar during the group's Kikaoo performances. He has now directed several of the groups music videos as well as Sauti Sol's music videos including their recent controversial hit 'Nishike.'

Have a look at Elani's video KooKoo below and check out their other videos on their YouTube Channel ElaniMuziki.
However, do Kenyan workers really know about the labor laws in the country and the rights and benefits they are entitled to? We'll try to break down a few of them for you.

Labor Law is a legislation of the employment act which simply outlines the rights of workers and obligations of the employers in the workplace. Just like several countries worldwide, the Kenyan labor law came about as a result of workers demanding for better conditions in the workplace. It also came about to allow workers to organise or work under labor unions or choose not to work under the unions altogether.

The provisions under the labor law and constitution of Kenya which are important to note include:

The right to equity,

Protection of dignity,

Protection against servitude, forced labour and discrimination,

The right to pursue a livelihood and,

Protection for children against exploitative labor practices and work that is harzadous to their wellbeing.

Some of the other important rights and benefits that every employed Kenyan should be accorded include:

Annual Leave

21 days of annual leave are accorded to Kenyan workers with full pay. Public holidays and weekly off/rest days are not counted as leave days. Employees are entitled to 1 rest day per week.

Paternity Leave

A man 'whose recognised wife' welcomes a baby is entitled to 2 weeks of paternity leave with full pay. The same is applicable to male employers. With the current marriage laws we wonder whether this will change too because as stated in the act paternity leave is only applicable to married men 'whose wives are recognised by the employers.'

Sick leave

Employed Kenyans are eligible for sick leave after 2 months of employment for a minimum of 7 days with full pay.

Public Holidays

The recognised public holidays in Kenya include:

New Year's Day - 1st January

Good Friday - April

RUSH has been dabbed our very own version of 'Sex and The City' and boasts of a star studded cast, including Citizen TV news anchor Janet Mbugua. Watch the teaser for the riveting series right here.

RUSH was created by Lucy Chodota and acclaimed actor/acting coach/producer/ director Neil Schell directed the show. It isn't clear why the show has taken a whole 2 years to get to the production phase; 2 years ago the show was rumoured to have cosmetic giant L'Oreal as one of its sponsors. Wendy Kimani, Ian Mbugua and Godfrey Odhiambo are among the show's cast as well as Marrianne Nungo, Scolly Cheruto, Wendy Sankale and Claude Judah. The plot revolves around 4 empowered African women Nana, Koko, Frida and Ayok as they go about their fabulous lives in their 'cosmopolitan world.' The series teaser suggests that some changes have been done to the cast; Patricia Kihoro may no longer be part of the series and Janet Mbugua seems to have taken over her initial role in the show and Wendy Sankale also seems to have taken over the role of Ayok, which was initially played by Scolly Cheruto..

The show released what they said was a pilot 2 years ago (watch it here) and in comparison it has been revamped making it bigger and markedly better. A Facebook page was opened up for Rush in November last year, further raising the anticipation of people like us who really can't wait to see if this is indeed our own version of Sex and The City. However, a Rush teaser for the show's pilot has been released giving us hope that we'll soon stayed glued to our screens following the exploits of the captivating women.
However, there are scores of Kenyans who are passionate about art, gone right ahead to study art as a discipline or delved right into relentlessly creating beautiful pieces of artwork. Anne Mwiti is one of the fast rising fine artists in Kenya to watch out for and we had the pleasure of talking to her about her art.

Anne Mwiti has received several accolades for her work, the most recent being the only Kenyan to have her artwork chosen for a group exhibition in Brazil for the 2014 World Cup.
Her artwork is currently on display in Kinsasha at the "Women Without Borders" exhibition which runs through to the 18th of April. Her artwork was reviewed by a DRC newspaper, read the article here
"The World Art Day aims at promoting and creating awareness of art world wide. This means a lot to me as an upcoming artist in Kenya. Today is the World Art Day (WAD).

In 2012, the International Association of Art (IAA) declared April 15th as the World Art Day with the aim of promoting and creating awareness of art worldwide. We spoke to a few fine artists in Kenya to find out whether this day holds special meaning to them and this is what they had to say:

Muhamad Yasin, owner of FNM.

Muhamad Yasin started FNM, which he co-runs with his wife Nasreen, about 3 months ago. The business exists exclusively online and came about as Nasreen's idea. Muhamad would bring quality kitchenware that are hard to find in Kenya or are available at costly prices for his friends and family from his trips to Dubai. Seeing the positive reception of these products, which were generally quite affordable, the two decided to capitalise on it and so FNM was born.

FNM, derives its name from Yasin's family; F stands for Fatma, Muhamad's baby, N for Nasreen his Wife and M for Muhamad. With such a sweet history behind the name, we can't help but fall in love more with the business. FNM operates through their Facebook page, OLX and Pigia Me. They offer free delivery services to clients within the Nairobi CBD and courier services to clients in other towns. They mostly offer courier services to clients in Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu.

Muhamad explains that they decided to operate online because "the world has turned to a global village and that is how business is now." there are many platforms for free advertising including Facebook groups like Soko Kuu and Online Soko with thousands of members who are willing buyers. He also explains that most people in urban areas have embraced online shopping, making the internet an easy market place to reach consumers.

He explains that the main challenges of selling online is getting clients to trust online businesses, owing to several con artists who have tarnished theHe explains that most clients want to pay upon delivery, not factoring that sellers have to cover costs such as shipping of products and courier services. He has overcomes this challenge by meeting clients halfway and allowing them to pay half the total amount before delivery and send the balance upon delivery. Another challenge he faces is risking sending fragile goods to clients which might break while being delivered or having deliveries take time to reach clients.
This weekend I decided to take a break from the usual Hollywood blockbusters I usually watch and come back home. I simply got on YouTube and searched for Kenyan films. I came across a few and here they are:

1. PAMELA

I actually watched Pamela a couple of years back and stumbling on it I couldn't resist rewatching it. It's a film bthat focuses on dosmetic violence and abuse from a child's point of view. The film was produced by James Kanja productions. Watch it below.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bfDpPjaUppQ

2.DECEIT

I'd heard about Deceit from the list of Kenyan films nominated for the 2014 AMVCA Awards. As usual, you never quite get around to watching these films, but thanks to YouTube got to watch it and I absolutely like it. Lizz Njagah delivers a stellar performance as usual in the film produced by Chromatic Pictures Africa Limited. Watch it below.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D6DrUd56qSY

3. MISS NOBODY

This is yet another film I remember watching a few years back and I might be halucinating but I remember it was in English the first time I saw it. Featuring Patricia Kihoro, it was produced for Scenarios from Africa by Hot Sun. The film adresses AIDS as a topic and focuses on the use of the power of social media to get justice. Watch it below.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gWxF-i0rHWw

4. THE SCHOOL RACE

This is another short I stumbled upon and it simply put a smile on my face. It follows three school children, seemingly friends, who embark on a race around their school environs. I liked the light hearted nature or the film, and who doesn't like films about kids? Watch it below.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYO5LqSX-rc

5.DEAR DIARY

This is a student film produced by Wambui Muigai and Jamhuri Film and Television Training Institute. I Have to give accolade to the wonderful production quality, the cinematography is memorable and I have to mention sound was given thought and planning which I feel is one of the production elements many Kenyan filmmakers fail to give proper attention to. Watch it below.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0FwWHtiC_1Y

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15876096233355821572noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1969759719278810336.post-50424416972017409552014-04-06T09:39:00.000-07:002014-05-13T01:35:29.309-07:00Stella Mwangi's Koolio

Stella Mwangi recently launched her new single 'Koolio' at Skyluxx. Blogs allow you to air out your opinions in your chosen lingo, style and most importantly they allow you to share with the rest of the world what you are passionate about. Different people start blogs for different reasons, but they are all always driven by a passion for something. 'Blogging for fashion' is something that has grown in popularity and has had the staying power in the blogsphere, with most of the popular Kenyan fashion bloggers clocking in at 3+ years of blogging. Without further ado, not in any particular order, we'd like to present to you our list of top Kenyan fashion blogs that we follow.

1. TOI MARKET

[caption id="606" align="aligncenter" width="701"] Damaris Muga's fashion blog Toi Market.[/caption]

You simply can't help but fall in love with Damaris Muga's witty use of words to talk about what she undisputedly loves; fashion. She says on her blog that she started it with the aim of giving her opinions to Kenyans on how to dress appropriately. She does digress a lot, we loyal fans appreciate this, to talk about diverse things that she goes through in life which am sure we all can relate to in one way or another. For the fashionistas always looking out for a good buy, Damaris does sell a couple of secondhand items at practically throw away prices which she says she sources from Gikomba/ Toi. She doesn't blog quite regularly, but once you read a couple of her posts you'll definitely be checking up on her blog for more posts.

2. FASHION NOTEBOOK

[caption id="attachment_609" align="aligncenter" width="697"] Nancie Mwai's Fashion Notebook[/caption]

Nancie Mwai's Fashion Notebook is a must-stop-by fashion blog for any self-proclaimed fashionista. She gives you tips on how to pair up simple outfits for a chic look, make-up tutorials for that flawless look and most recently effortless glam looks for the pregnant diva. Nancie Mwai's blog is quite popular, she is often mentioned almost synonymously with fashion blogging. She blogs on the regular, always a good welcome for fashion junkies looking to keep up with trends and get insightful tips.

3. THIS IS ESS

[caption id="611" align="aligncenter" width="695"] Sharon Mundia's This is Ess[/caption]

This is Ess was a fashion blog brought to my attention by a friend, since it is one of those radical sites you simply must introduce fellow fashion enthusiasts to. To begin with, Sharon Mundia who runs the blog is simply adorable and absolutely stunning which keeps you going back to check out what new ensemble she has racked up. What we love about her blog is how she ties every look to a memory or story from her life, showing that fashion is created out of the ordinary and projected with personality to create a literal walking piece of art. She also blogs on the regular, keeping hundreds if not thousands of fashion enthusiasts well sated.

4. OUR STYLE KENYA

[caption id="attachment_613" align="aligncenter" width="715"] Joy Kendi's Our Style Kenya[/caption]

Watched the highly riveting campus-based flick 'Changing Times' which aired on KTN?
